Spindles and Balustrades
Edwardian spindles are individually turned and the profile varies from property to property. Many have been painted dozens of times. Where build-up has buried the profile detail, stripping back to bare timber is the correct approach.
Each spindle is stripped, sanded, and primed individually. On a full-height staircase with 30 to 50 spindles, this is a significant undertaking and priced accordingly. The result reads as a restored feature, not a repeatedly covered one.
Newel Posts and Handrails
Edwardian newel posts are often substantial turned timber elements. They take more daily contact than spindles and are usually in worse condition. Your decorator assesses each one and advises whether stripping is needed or whether keying and overcoating will do.
Handrails are finished in a durable eggshell or satin — they need a washable finish that holds up to constant contact. Flat matt marks and wears quickly on handrails and is not used.
Stair Strings and Risers
Strings, risers, and treads are assessed individually. Treads in use are not typically painted; painted treads become slippery. Strings and risers are repainted as part of the staircase programme. Risers often need the most preparation in properties where the treads have been uncarpeted and the risers carry decades of wear.
Access Planning for Multi-Storey Staircases
The staircase is the only route between floors in most homes. Multi-storey projects are planned so the stairs stay passable at all times, with a daily phasing plan agreed before work begins.
Work happens in sections — one side of the balustrade is completed and dries, then the other side is tackled. For three-floor Edwardian properties in Bassett or Highfield, the programme is planned in detail before starting. For the full hallway and landing context, see our hallway painting page.
Combined Staircase and Hallway Programme
Staircases and hallways are painted together because they form one continuous view from the front door. Single programme, one access plan, combined price. For a wider whole-property programme, see our interior painting page.
Here’s How It Works
1. Site Visit and Assessment
Your decorator assesses the number of spindles, the newel post type, the string profile, and the condition of all elements. Access phasing is planned at this stage.
2. Surface Preparation
Loose or failing paint is stripped from individual spindles, newel posts, and profile details. Sound areas are abraded and cleaned. Bare timber is primed.
3. Undercoating
A full undercoat is applied to all stripped or bare surfaces before the topcoat.
4. Phased Painting with Access Maintained
Work happens in sections, keeping the staircase accessible at all times. The staircase is not closed off completely at any point during the project.
5. Topcoat and Inspection
Final coats are applied and all surfaces are inspected before close-out. Your decorator walks through the staircase with you on completion.

Staircase Painting Costs in Southampton
Prices below are estimates only. Every staircase is different. Call 023 8001 5722 for a precise quote.
Spindle Count
A small Victorian terrace staircase may have 20 spindles. An Edwardian detached in Bassett with a full two-flight staircase may have 50 or more. Each adds preparation and painting time.
Preparation Required
Where spindles and newel posts need stripping before priming, this adds significantly to the project time.
Combined Scope
A staircase painted alone costs more per element than one combined with a full hallway and landing programme.
