Why Choose Southampton Decorators
Timber Sash Partner
Original sash windows on Bassett Avenue, Lakewood Road, and Highfield Road require correct preparation and product selection. Your decorator understands what these windows need.
Coastal Climate Products
Solent-adjacent properties weather faster. Salt deposition on south and west-facing elevations attacks paint adhesion. Your decorator specifies finishes with UV resistance and flexibility suited to these conditions.
Clear Pricing
Your decorator prepares a written quote covering the scope of work before anything starts.
Trusted Partner
We work with decorators we’ve checked for trade history, local coverage, and an excellent track record.

Timber Sash Window Preparation and Painting
Timber sash windows on period properties need thorough preparation. End grain and sash joints are where failure starts. Failing paint at these points is stripped back to sound timber, cracks and soft sections filled, then a full primer goes on before undercoating.
Sashes are checked for free movement before and after painting. They’re never painted shut. Glazing putty that needs replacing is flagged before the final coat goes on. Large Edwardian properties in Bassett and Highfield with eight to twelve sash windows are a substantial project.
Casement Window Frame Painting
Casement windows in 1930s Shirley Hills semis and post-war Chandler’s Ford and Hedge End detacheds are usually in better shape than period sashes. Where existing paint is sound, thorough keying and overcoating is enough.
Where casement frames show failing paint, soft wood at the base rail, or cracking at the joints, the timber is stripped back to sound substrate before repainting. Your decorator advises whether a frame is worth preserving or whether replacement is the more practical option.
Window Sills
Window sills take more water than any other external timber element. They sit horizontally, collect water on the surface, and let it penetrate at any crack or joint. Sills in poor condition are the main cause of water ingress into the walls below.
Failed sills are stripped to bare timber. Soft sections are treated or repaired with exterior filler. The sill is then primed, undercoated, and finished in durable exterior gloss or satin.
uPVC and Composite Window Frames
Faded, discoloured, or yellowed uPVC can be overpainted with specialist plastic primers and compatible topcoats. Your decorator advises honestly on whether the frame condition and age make painting a worthwhile investment. The result is durable when applied correctly but won’t match the longevity of a factory finish.
Combined Exterior Programmes
Window frame painting is most efficient as part of a wider exterior programme. Fascias, soffits, front door painting, and windows all need attention on the same cycle in Southampton’s coastal climate. One combined quote covers all of it in a single mobilisation. For the full exterior approach, see our exterior painting page.
Here’s How It Works
1. Window Condition Assessment
Each window is inspected for paint condition, timber soundness, glazing putty condition, and sash or casement freedom of movement.
2. Surface Preparation
Failing paint is stripped at joints and end grain. Soft timber is treated. Cracks and gaps are filled. Glazing putty is replaced where necessary.
3. Priming
A full timber primer is applied to all bare or stripped sections. The primer stage determines how well the finish coats adhere and how long they hold.
4. Undercoating and Topcoating
A full undercoat followed by two topcoats in a weather-resistant exterior gloss or satin. Sashes are painted in the open position and freedom of movement is confirmed after painting.
5. Inspection and Glazing Check
All frames and sills are inspected. Sashes are checked to open and close correctly. Any glass that has been touched is cleaned before close-out.

Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 023 8001 5722 for a precise quote.
Window Type and Count
Sash windows with multiple panes take longer than modern casements. A property with twelve sash windows is a substantially larger project than one with eight casements.
Preparation Required
Windows in poor condition needing full strip and repair at the joints take considerably longer than windows in sound condition needing only keying.
Coastal Exposure
South and west-facing windows on Solent-adjacent properties need more thorough preparation and may benefit from a higher-specification product.
