Interior and exterior timber in period and modern homes. Southampton’s period housing stock carries more timber than modern equivalents. Preparing and finishing all of it correctly determines how the interior reads when the walls are freshly painted around it.

Why Choose Southampton Decorators
Period Woodwork Preparation
Original Edwardian and Victorian timber in Southampton properties carries multiple paint layers. Your decorator assesses correctly and prepares accordingly.
Coastal Exterior Partner
Salt-driven wood movement, marine humidity, and UV reflected off the Solent accelerate exterior timber failure. Your decorator specifies products and joint preparation suited to these conditions.
Clear Pricing
Your decorator prepares a written quote covering the scope of work before anything starts.
Trusted Partner
We work with decorators we’ve checked for trade history, local coverage, and an excellent track record.

Wood Painting Services

Interior Woodwork
Interior woodwork in period properties includes skirtings, architraves, panelled doors, picture rails, dado rails, window reveals, and sills. Each element is prepared properly before painting. Our interior painting service covers the lot.
Your decorator assesses whether existing paint is sound enough for a light abrade and overcoat, or whether stripping is needed. A large Edwardian detached in Bassett or Highfield with six or more rooms has a substantial woodwork scope, including staircase painting elements.
Exterior Timber
Exterior timber is under far more stress than interior woodwork. Salt-laden Solent air, UV on south-facing elevations, and Hampshire’s damp winters all work against exterior coatings. Preparation is the dominant factor in how long the finish holds.
At all joints and end grain on exterior woodwork, particularly on fascias, soffits, and window frames, the timber is stripped back to sound substrate. For exterior window frame detail, see our window frame painting page. For external front door detail, see our front door painting page.
Timber Stripping and Restoration
Where timber has been painted repeatedly until the surface is thick, clogged in profile detail, and in poor condition, stripping is the right starting point. Chemical strippers and heat methods are used depending on the timber and environment.
After stripping, bare timber is inspected for cracks, splits, and soft sections. Original Edwardian woodwork, including turned newel posts, carved string sections, and moulded skirting profiles, reads with much greater clarity when stripped and restored.
Oil and Natural Finishes for Timber
Some timber is better suited to an oil or wax finish than paint. Hardwood window sills, garden gates, and decking rails are examples where a penetrating oil protects without forming a film that peels.
Danish oil, linseed oil, and timber-specific oils are used where this is the right approach. Your decorator advises on finish type based on the timber species and exposure.
Garden Timber and Outbuildings
Garden gates, fence rails, gate posts, and timber outbuildings are included in exterior timber programmes where specified. For dedicated garden timber programmes, see our fence painting and shed painting pages.
Here’s How It Works
1. Timber Assessment
All timber in the scope is assessed: surface condition, paint layer history, extent of any rot or soft sections, and the correct preparation approach for each element.
2. Stripping Where Required
Joints, end grain, profile clogging, and failing sections are stripped to sound timber before priming.
3. Remedial Repair
Cracks, soft sections, and rot-affected areas are repaired with appropriate fillers or timber repair compound. Exterior timber rot is treated before filling.
4. Priming and Undercoating
Full timber primer on all bare sections. Undercoat on all timber before the finish coat.
5. Topcoat Application
Appropriate finish in the correct sheen level for the surface type and its use. Interior woodwork in eggshell or satin. Exterior timber in a flexible, weather-resistant exterior finish.
6. Inspection
All timber is inspected before close-out. Touch-ups and any missed sections are addressed on the day.

Wood Painting Costs in Southampton
Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 023 8001 5722 for a precise quote.
Woodwork Volume
An Edwardian property in Bassett with six rooms, original skirtings, picture rails, panelled doors, and a full staircase has significantly more timber than a modern property.
Preparation Required
A full strip and repaint costs more than a straightforward key and overcoat programme. The surface condition at the site visit determines which approach is right.
Location
Exterior timber near the Solent requires better products and more thorough joint preparation than interior woodwork.
