The large detacheds on Bassett Avenue and the surrounding streets were built roughly 1900 to 1914. The sashes are substantial — wide frames, large panes, and on many front elevations ornate upper sashes with leaded lights. Each decorative glazing bar is masked individually before any sanding or stripping.

Victorian terraces in Banister Park and around Bevois Mount carry decades of accumulated paint. Paint-stuck sashes are the most common complaint. Your decorator scores and frees stuck sashes, strips channels back to bare wood, and replaces all failed glazing putty before painting.

Cracked, shrunk, or missing putty lets water into the rebate timber behind the glass. All failed runs are raked out and replaced — either traditional linseed oil-based or a modern flexible polymer putty. Putty must cure before primer or paint goes over it, and curing time is built into the programme.

Bottom rail rot is the most common structural issue on Southampton sashes. Where rot is localised, an epoxy consolidant stabilises the wood and an epoxy filler restores the profile. Where the rail is too far gone, your decorator advises on a splice repair or full replacement. New paint is never applied over active rot.
