Exterior Painters in Southampton

Southampton Decorators are exterior painters covering period and modern properties across Southampton and the surrounding Hampshire suburbs.
Southampton’s proximity to the Solent accelerates exterior weathering. Salt-laden air shortens the service life of exterior coatings on fascias, timber frames, and painted render. We work on Edwardian semis in Bassett and Bitterne Park, rendered terraces in Portswood, and exposed-facing properties in Fareham and Netley.
- Rendered and masonry walls: preparation, repair, and painting
- Timber sash windows and casement frames
- Fascias, soffits, and guttering
- Front doors and porch surrounds
- Garden walls and outbuildings

Southampton’s Exterior Painting Specialists
Rendered Walls
Rendered Edwardian semis in Bitterne Park and the larger rendered detacheds in Bassett and Highfield represent the majority of our exterior masonry work. We inspect all render before quoting, fill hairline cracks, and treat biological growth before painting. We also offer dedicated deck painting services.
For projects combining exterior masonry with a full repaint, see our house painting page.
Timber Windows and Woodwork
Edwardian properties on Bassett Avenue, Lakewood Road, and throughout Highfield retain original timber sash windows on many fronts. We strip back to sound timber and repair any rot before priming. We also offer dedicated fence painting services.
Timber maintained correctly outlasts replacement plastic frames, which look wrong on period properties. We also offer dedicated window frame painting services.
Fascias, Soffits, and Guttering
Timber fascias and soffits on Edwardian properties in Bassett and Bitterne Park require regular maintenance. In this coastal climate, joints and end grain fail first. Catching this at the maintenance stage is far cheaper than replacing rotted timber later.
Front Doors and Porch Surrounds
The corniced bay frontages typical of larger Edwardian detacheds require careful painting around mouldings, columns, and timber sash frames. For Edwardian property painting projects, we cover the full front elevation. We also offer dedicated front door painting services.
Garden Walls and Outbuildings
Boundary walls, gate piers, and outbuildings need the same approach as the main house. Ignoring boundary walls while repainting the main house leaves the job looking unfinished from the street. We also offer dedicated shed painting services.

Our Exterior Painting Process
1. Site Assessment
We visit before quoting and check every surface. Render condition, timber condition, biological growth, and the aspect of each elevation are all assessed.
2. Surface Preparation
We pressure-wash masonry and render, treat biological growth, repair cracked or hollow render, and strip timber back to sound material. We also offer dedicated masonry painting services.
3. Priming
Masonry receives a masonry primer. Bare timber receives an appropriate timber primer. The correct primer determines whether the finish holds through Southampton’s coastal winters.
4. Paint Application
Exterior paint requires dry conditions and temperatures above 5 degrees Celsius. Two finish coats are standard. High-exposure elevations are assessed for a third coat.
5. Inspection and Clean-Up
All surfaces are inspected in good light after the final coat has cured. Touch-ups are completed before we leave.

Exterior Painting Costs in Southampton
Exterior painting costs are driven by wall area, surface condition, scope of woodwork, and the level of preparation required by the coastal climate. We also offer dedicated wood painting services.

Elevation Exposure
South and west-facing elevations require more thorough preparation and may benefit from an additional finish coat. Properties facing Southampton Water directly need the same approach.
Surface Condition
Failed or heavily chalked masonry paint, cracked render, and timber in poor condition all add preparation time and may require repair before painting begins.
Scope of Work
Walls-only is less than walls plus fascias, soffits, windows, and front door. Each additional surface type adds preparation and application time. We also offer dedicated door painting services.
Trade insight. On rendered Edwardian semis near the Solent, always use a breathable or flexible masonry coat with good UV resistance. Standard economy masonry paints chalk out quickly on exposed Hampshire elevations.
