Pebbledash Painting in Southampton

Pebbledash painting in Southampton by Southampton Decorators, inter-war semi exterior

Southampton Decorators — pebbledash painting in Southampton, delivered by a vetted local decorator.

  • Pebbledash walls on inter-war and post-war semis
  • Upper-storey pebbledash with smooth render or brick below
  • Biological growth treatment — moss and algae common on north-facing walls
  • Repair and re-pointing of areas where pebbles have detached
  • Full colour change or refreshed finish in the existing colour

Southampton’s coastal climate accelerates algae and moss on pebbledash, especially on north and east-facing walls. Tidal air from the Itchen and Solent pushes growth faster than inland. Correct cleaning and treatment is the difference between a five-year finish and one failing in eighteen months.

Why Choose Southampton Decorators

Correct Textured Technique

Pebbledash needs long-pile rollers and brush work — standard rollers leave dry patches and bare stone exposed.

Clear Pricing

Your decorator prepares a written quote covering the scope of work before anything starts.

Vetted Partner

We work with decorators we’ve checked for trade history, local coverage, and an excellent track record.

Coastal Preparation

Biological growth is treated thoroughly before any coating is applied — non-negotiable on Solent-side properties.

How Pebbledash Is Painted

Pebbledash cannot be painted with a standard short-pile roller. The stones sit proud and leave deep crevices a fine roller never reaches, giving a patchy result with dry spots at any angle.

A long-pile masonry roller worked in multiple directions, with a brush into the deeper crevices, is the right approach. A second coat is always needed. Pebbledash uses significantly more paint per square metre than smooth render because the stones create more surface area.

Preparation and Surface Treatment

Preparation is where pebbledash painting succeeds or fails. Dirt, algae, moss, and lichen sit deep in the texture and cannot be painted over. Growth left underneath will keep spreading and lift the new coat from within.

Your decorator pressure-washes off loose material and dirt, then applies a biocide treatment — particularly in St Denys and Bitterne where tree cover and north-facing aspects breed persistent growth. The treated surface is left to dry fully.

Colour Change and Paint Selection

A colour change is one of the main reasons homeowners paint pebbledash. An old off-white or grey house can be transformed by a deep heritage tone like dark green, slate blue, or warm stone. For smooth render, see our render painting page.

Breathable masonry paint is used so moisture can move through the wall. Your decorator advises on colours that suit Southampton’s coastal properties and brick tones.

Partial Pebbledash — Upper Storey Only

Many Southampton properties — particularly the inter-war semis in Shirley Hills and Bassett — have pebbledash on the upper storey only, with smooth render or brick below. This needs ladder or tower access up top and careful masking at the boundary.

For most two-storey semis with upper-half pebbledash, a scaffold tower is sufficient and included in the quote.

Pebbledash Repairs Before Painting

Detached-pebble patches stand out under fresh paint. They’re repaired first by pressing matching aggregate into compatible exterior filler, then primed and cured before painting so the patch doesn’t show through.

Where the render itself has cracked or pulled from the wall, your decorator assesses whether localised repair is enough. For smooth render and masonry work, see our exterior painting page.

Here’s How It Works

1. Assessment

Surface condition, extent of coverage, biological growth, and any repair work are assessed before quoting.

2. Surface Preparation

The pebbledash is pressure-washed thoroughly to remove all dirt, algae, and loose material. Where moss or algae is present, a biocide treatment is applied and the surface is left to dry fully before proceeding.

3. Undercoating

Detached pebbles and damaged areas are made good and primed before the main coat goes on.

4. Phased Painting

A full coat of breathable masonry paint is applied by long-pile roller and worked in with a brush. Applied in sections to maintain a wet edge.

5. Topcoat and Inspection

A second coat is applied once the first coat is fully dry — essential for complete coverage on textured surfaces. All surfaces inspected before sign-off.
